Harvard research supports early musical training

Harvard-based researchers find a link between early musical training and cognitive capacities that allow for planned, controlled behavior. As we’ve reported, a large body of research has noted a link between music education and higher test scores. But precisely why learning an instrument would have a positive impact on academic achievement has never been clear. A new study from Boston Children’s Hospital provides a possible answer. It reports musical training may promote the development and maintenance of a key set of mental skills. Youth Masterclass Weekend

A couple of years ago, there was a Youth Master Class event in association with Conservatory Canada, The Canadian Music Centre and the Trillium Foundation. I had some students accepted into this Master Class, and it was great seeing what they did with composition. One of the more interesting activities they did with the students was to have them use the piano in different ways. It was wonderful seeing the creativity they had with their compositions! Frozen in Vivaldi’s Winter

As some of you know Vivaldi was a fantastic Baroque composer. The timeless “The Four Seasons” including Winter inspired some music in Disney‘s latest “Frozen” .  The Piano Guys take this to the next level. In this video you will see a 7 foot grand piano with icicles hanging from it (the video was shot at Ice Castles which was 32 degrees F), and the cello, with the beat given by the acoustics of the cello. Wow it’s hard to believe that December is already here.  I am now offering January Start classes, which I am still accepting registrations for: Saturdays: 9:00 am Sunrise 2 (for those that have completed Sunrise 1) 9:50 am Sunrise 1 (for ages 2-4) 10:45 am Sunbeams 1 (for beginner SK and grade 1 students)   Please contact me for details.
