MYC is more than just a music lesson. It is a commitment to your child’s music education and development. To get the most enjoyment out of your class, I ask that you do your best to keep pace with the class through regular practice at home and by completing the weekly homework assignment. Children enjoy learning music and are proud of their own progress when they come to class well prepared. As a fun bonus, they are rewarded in class for completing a minimum of 5 practices per week. Practice time should be fun since there’s a variety of things to do. You can work on keyboard work, homework pages, singing songs we learned in class, rhythm exercises, and coloring pages. Anything we do in our Music classes counts as homework – and trust me we have fun! Regular practice provides a more desirable result than trying to learn everything right before the lesson. Studies show that new concepts reviewed within 48 hours (24 is even better) are more easily committed to memory and learned. I ask that you do your first practice session within 24 hours of our class time.

Missed Lessons:

If it becomes necessary to miss a class, you can still get the homework assignment online. If you are missing more than one class, please let me know ahead of time, so I can give materials/handouts to you in advance if necessary. There is no refund on tuition for a missed class. If a class is cancelled due to bad weather or an illness on my part, the class will be rescheduled at a time convenient for the majority of students.

Waiting Area and Siblings:

Washroom facilities are provided in the waiting room for your use. As this time has been set aside for you and your child, I ask that siblings not be brought to music class unless there are special circumstances, and you have spoken to me in advance.

Discontinuation of Classes:

The MYC program is a progressive one, meaning that your spot is saved for the whole year, and no one can join in halfway through the year (just like your high school classes). Please note, that there is a non-refundable deposit, if you decide to discontinue lessons early. Once I have been notified that lessons will be discontinued, remaining cheques will be voided and returned to you. All and any used materials cannot be returned. Materials that are still shrink-wrapped can be returned for a refund.

Studio Expectations:

Everyone is expected to be polite and show respect for each other.  If there are any concerns about the learning environment please address them to me. Please allow time for your child to think for him/herself. As mentioned in the parent guide, it is important for the teacher to see how your child is doing on his/her own so that I can adjust my instructions to help your child learn. Parents and students are expected to be there on time for each lesson. Take notes on new concepts presented and get as much out of lessons as you can.  Have fun – enthusiasm is contagious.

Parent Involvement:

As you know, you are key to your child’s success. A parent or caregiver is required to attend and participate in each MYC class. By participating in the class, adults become aware of their child’s learning style, strengths, and interests. This is also very helpful during at-home practices.

Questions? … Please let me know

I welcome your questions and feedback about my classes. Communication between student, parent, and teacher is important at all times. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me at mycnora@gmail.com (or my phone number), and I would be more than happy to discuss them with you. I will have more time to talk to you on the phone rather than after class when there may be another student waiting for their lesson to begin. I look forward to working with you and your child this year.
